It happens everywhere in any part of the globe. Take a look in India, Nepal, Africa, South America, or even Europe and US. So not only Indonesian or in Indonesia.

With an unemployment rate at 20+% in Indonesia, it contributes to: a) Too much time on their free hands. If you look at some of these "protesters", you will find children, infants being carried by their mothers, and other unemployed who take to the street for the "fun" of such large gatherings. b) The frustration of not having the government work for the people. They are unemployed and the government is as corrupt as ever, and these people have no outlets to tell their government except by show of force. I don't think Indonesians are violent in nature, but just like any other countries that are developing (lack of higher education) and have high rate of unemployment, you'd be able to see more of these protests as opposed to peaceful rally in other parts of the world. It's unfortunate but it's a way of life for Indonesians.

It can.. one day. I hope. It is sickening, it's true. This may sound like an excuse. However, Indonesia is only a young country. It is in its 'teenage' moment. This chaos is a part of the process of growing up. It is just a stage that needs to be passed through. We, people, learn a lot during the stages of our childhood, adolescence, and eventually as an adult. We stumble and fall a lot of times. We get pain and bruises all over. Sometimes we break down and cry. Yet, we make the efforts to stand up, strive, and move on. We need to pay a huge cost to grow up. I really hope that this nation will learn through the stages of growing up to become 'an adult' country. Let's see how much Indonesia will pay to grow up; how much pain Indonesia has to endure before it wakes up. (I understand that it has cost young talents. Sad!) It is hurtful to see this country, so rich and beautiful, get damaged by its own people, the irresponsible ones of course.

I think its because their words is not heard buy the government/factory their protesting!people keep writing things or ask for their complaint to be heard by the government/factory..but no they never listened..thats why they protest!..about it turning out to be violent...thats because of those stupid police!!they hit unarmed protesters....hit kick people..even women...so isn't it ok to hit back?my ex-bf was in a peace protest about the past president...and the police were hitting them.....and he comes home bleeding!arghhhh i just dislike Indonesian police too much!! >_<

population leads to the unemployment and economic competion problems.... no wonder it always happen there.... especially in the developing countries........ however, the worst thing is.... no one could do anything except protests..,.... plus.... i agree when the other guy said a lot of indonesians are uneducated..... and they are lazy as well! they think that by showing their aggresive nature someone will listen to them.... hmmmmhhh.... problems with uneducated people.... not to be sarcastic or racist... but only an indonesian like me could tell the reality of my own country...

when you have 200 million people, mostly poor, from hundreds cultural background differences, i think it's common. Violence is because the law is not being uphold and enforce. No nation is violent in nature... but when you are poor and have nothing left.... you could do a lot of terrible things coz there is nothing left behind for you to hold on to. If you are rich... you wouldn't want to protest, you just wanna sit back and enjoy the best things money can buy. you can even spend it more lavishly if it is dirty money...heck it's dirty money any way ( a lot of people corrupt in Indonesia... because of the law is not being uphold)

Why do you ask this..?? Does it effect you directly...?? Most of the protests are most likely instigated by people with money and power trying to steer something in their direction (politics or corporations). The 'protesters' usually get some money and a feed, and for a lot of people, is a Big Deal.... Otherwise, most Indonesians would rather stay home if it wasn't for the money. Not sure where you are from but how about worrying about what goes in your own house. Historically, Protesters have shaped this country. From the times of Dutch Occupation to Suharto Fall.... I think you will find that the protests against the G8 - in Western cities - are usually much more violent than anything in Indonesia.
